RICHMOND IS A WELCOMING CITY

The Richmond I came to and that I love – and which I hope to continue to build as a member of city council – is a uniquely welcoming place.

Elect Sunny Ho Councillor

After growing up in Hong Kong and studying in the U.K., I made Richmond my home 25 years ago. My wife and I believe this was a great decision. Richmond has been an incredibly welcoming place for us in every way. We enjoy the friendly people, the excellent recreational and community amenities and the business-friendly policies of city council, which have allowed us to build our business, employ scores of local people and undertake philanthropic projects that give back to our city.

Richmond is not without its challenges, of course. As one of the country’s fastest-growing municipalities, and with a great multicultural mix, we, as a community, have had to make some adjustments.

There are those – including some running for office this election season – whose words and deeds seek to divide, rather than unite us. This is not the Richmond I recognize.

The Richmond I came to and that I love – and which I hope to continue to build as a member of city council – is a uniquely welcoming place.

Like my family, so many people have chosen Richmond because of its livability, safety and low taxes.

It is remarkable that our city council, led by Richmond First councilors, has been able to keep our property and business taxes at such competitive levels while delivering top-quality services to residents. We have more police and more fire and rescue personnel today than we did four years ago. Our recreational and sports facilities are second to none. We have programs and services for our seniors, including culturally appropriate offerings for a community as diverse as ours. Young people are encouraged to strive for their physical, emotional and intellectual best with top-quality schools, parks, sports facilities and job opportunities. We have more childcare spaces. More buses. Increased Canada Line frequency. We have more rental accommodations, including affordable housing. We have capped mega-homes and saved agricultural lands.

Our city government works collaboratively with all sectors – businesses, unions, developers, renters, everyone – instead of pitting groups against one another, as happens too often in politics at all levels. Collaboration, instead of confrontation, is the best way to get things done. I know that – and my colleagues in Richmond First have demonstrated that on council.

As your city councilor, every decision I make will be taken through a prism of inclusivity for people of all identities, origins and abilities. This is not a promise. It is an inescapable part of who I am, because this is my story. Everything I have done – building businesses and doing philanthropic work in Richmond – has been possible because this is an inclusive society.

Richmond First is a collegial coalition of independent-minded public servants. I feel very honoured to be part of a team that combines experienced incumbent elected officials with deeply dedicated newcomers with a range of community experience who all share the same vision: A safe, healthy, livable, welcoming Richmond.

Other candidates can say “We promise …” Richmond First says “We deliver.” As your newest city councilor, I will bring to the job a commitment to continuing and strengthening this city’s incredibly welcoming culture.
