Starting next fall, of course, fare gates for SkyTrain finally will be in operation. But there’ll still be no fare gates for TransLink’s buses. And fare cheating will undoubtedly continue to rile the public.
Just ask long-serving Richmond Coun. Bill McNulty, who remembers that, when he first championed fare gates six years ago, saying they were needed both for fairness and safety, he was shouted down by TransLink representatives.
“I persisted at every opportunity to speak out for them and each time, despite strong public support, I was told I was on the wrong side of the argument,” he wrote in a letter to the Richmond News.
McNulty, a former track coach, has three tips for TransLink: “Ensure everybody pays their fares, don’t hammer motorists just because they need to drive a vehicle and offer services that people want.”
Let’s hope TransLink finally is ready to listen …
