Richmond councillors are warning that a proposed jet fuel storage facility and underground pipeline to Vancouver International Airport pose an unacceptable risk to residents.
The Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corp. (VAFFC) wants to barge jet fuel to a new marine terminal and fuel-receiving facility about one kilometre east of the Riverport entertainment and sports complex on the south arm of the Fraser River.
The jet fuel would then surge through a 15-kilometre pipeline across East Richmond to Sea Island. The new delivery system is projected to cost between $70 million and $100 million.
“A tonne of jet fuel will be off-loaded and stored there with the potential for a mishap,” said Richmond Coun. Ken Johnston.
